However, with the recent option of permanent remote work, we decided to make that dream a reality and head upstate. After reaching out to a NYC realtor, and friend, about how best to approach the Catskill market, we were recommended to Alex. Prior to meeting Alex in person, we spent some time on the phone and exchanging emails getting to know each other, letting him know what we liked, what mattered most, our budget, etc. The extra time he spent up front really set us up for success and prepared us to navigate a fast moving and competitive market. On our first trip upstate, we gave pretty loose parameters as to what we were looking for only saying we wanted a home that was fairly remote, with a little bit of land, and that we wouldn’t mind doing some fixing up, all under a certain price point. We saw about six properties that day, all of which didn’t work out for one reason or another. However, Alex was extremely informative in the process, and spent extra time showing us around the area, and telling us about all of the different towns and what they had to offer. After each home we saw he would give us great feedback and insights on which were worth taking on as a project, and others that were best to walk away from. We instantly knew he wasn’t about making a sale, but genuinely wanted to find a place that was perfect for us. On our next outing together, we fell in love with one home in particular and thought that it was the one. Alex did his research and found out for us that the home had multiple offers and that it was going to be a competitive bid process. So before making our offer, he helped us formulate a strategy to make a competitive offer that was matched against the market’s reality, without us having to overpay. While we ended up not getting this home due to a higher offer, we learned a lot about the process and it helped prepare us for the next set of listings and another rejection. We hoped that losing our first offer was a one time thing, but after our second rejected offer, we started feeling rather discouraged, and were ready to walk away from the whole process. We didn’t want to end up in another competitive bid process where we lost to someone who was willing to spend 30% over list price. After talking to Alex he assured us that with some more patience that the right place would pop up at the right price. Almost four months after starting the search, we stumbled upon a home that was very unassuming in the listing but once seeing it in person, we realized we had just found a gem. Alex worked with us to quickly put together an offer and less than 24 hours later had a response that it was accepted, for 3.5% under list price! We know without Alex’s guidance in this process, we would have probably ended up either walking away or paying over price for a home. After the accepted offer, Alex continued staying in touch well beyond the time he needed to. He went above and beyond to make sure we knew every bit of information regarding the closing process. He made recommendations on lawyers, banks, home inspectors, and by the end of it, he had helped us assemble a great team that guided us from accepted offer to close. Looking back on the entire process, there is no way we would have been able to go from Zillow searches to first time homeowners without the help of Alex. He made an emotional, long, and oftentimes confusing journey seem possible, manageable, and genuinely enjoyable.
